The duplicate folders were created at the time of the upgrade and they are all empty. My data is still in my original folders. Type Settings on the search bar. There give a name to the account and provide password if you want. I had the duplicate files problem when updating to Windows I had "Documents" which seemed to replace "My Documents", and also I had "My Documents" as well, and this file was not accessible.
When I tried I got the message 'not accessible' so I had no idea what was in it, if anything. Could not run "properties" on it either. Just recently I got annoyed by this [years after the change from XP Pro to Windows 10] and applied the fix provided by Microsoft to make the "My Documents" file accessible by changing access permissions. On a roll, I decided to compare the "Documents" and the "My Documents" files and see if there were any differences, and found there were no folders different, but that the odd file mis-saved to 'Documents' [after the upgrade] rather than the folder it belonged in within "Documents" was in the "Documents" folder but not in the "My Documents" folder.
So now the challenge is to see if the updates to "Documents" individual folders [ie adding new files to existing folders] has been duplicated in "My Documents" folders. If no, it would suggest there have been two separate folders "Documents" and "My Documents" and that I can safely delete the old "My Documents" leaving the current "Documents" as the working folder.
However if the answer is yes, that the same folders have two handles, namely "Documents" and "My Documents", where one of them is a bit like a shortcut, then [a] I don't need to delete "My Documents" because its not using any hard drive space worth worrying about and [b] any attempt to remove [say] "My Documents" might risk deleting all my files.
So here's the question: when the duplicate "Documents" is created, is it a complete duplicate with a second set of everything that is in the "My Documents" folder [at that instant of creation of course], or not? I updated from win7 Ultimate 64bit to Win10Pro.
I have now discovered that Windows 10 seems to have created duplicate documents, music, pictures and video folder. The original folders have a location of 'My Documents, My Music etc' whereas the one that was created when the upgrade was done is simply an empty folder. Variants of this problem are on the community forum with suggested solutions none of which have any impact.
